The following are the 6 strategies GMCCI is taking for further community development for 2011-2012.
Seek the adoption of regional policies for balanced growth. Balanced growth means economic and population growth, as well as growth in the arts, recreation and culture.
a) Focus on growing exposure and making a tourist attraction out of the history, assets and current manufacturing in Muscatine.
b) Leverage the river and get a restaurant to operate on city property.
c) Participate in visioning and collaborative efforts to drive appropriate, well-planned growth throughout the community. This will include the new urban renewal district, housing cluster and retail segments.
Chamber Leadership as an Information Source
Continue to position the Chamber as a leading source for up-to-date, accurate and timely economic and community information.
The new website that is being built for 2011 will provide a knowledge base for community events. This site will provide a positive first impression of all aspects of the Muscatine Community.
Be supportive of the education initiative for children and adults to build, engage, recruit and retain human capital, brainpower and knowledge. (School Improvement Action Team, Muscatine Connected, Flickinger Learning Center, Muscatine Business Forum, Muscatine Community College, Eastern Iowa Community College District, University of Iowa, Iowa State University, Saint Ambrose University and all local educational institutions of higher education)
a) Maintain and grow Leadership Muscatine program to a maximum of 35 participants through ongoing promotion and recruitment efforts.
b) The Chamber will serve as an ongoing resource to community educational institutions.
c) SCORE: Attract and retain 2 additional SCORE counselors to meet growing demand.
Community and County Infrastructure Plan/ Vision
Co-sponsor, with the city of Muscatine and Muscatine County, a Regional Planning/Visionary Initiative to build agreement on our regional vision, planning and infrastructure needs that will accommodate future growth, including but not limited to safety, police, water, roads, sewer and sanitation, disaster prevention and recovery, and flood mitigation and recovery.
Build community collaboration and seek to coalesce stakeholders around common
interests, including strategies to utilize results from the recent Muscatine community survey to build partnerships that can drive change and improvements.
Community Health Initiative
Support efforts of the existing and future health coalition’s work on a health and wellness plan for Muscatine County.
Support a climate of collaboration between Muscatine area health care providers to ensure a continuum of quality care for residents.
Ensure that supply of appropriate housing to accommodate employees recruited by local businesses with the goal of more of these people living in Muscatine County.
